Andrea Bachman and Devin Schmit

We are avid organic gardeners with some farming and orchard experience. Our vision is to homestead and expand our growing operation to offer a place to live in exchange for help on the farm. We would love to build community around regenerative practices and have a space for education, skill-sharing, gatherings and events. We are looking for land in and near Kalamazoo, ideally on the west side. A minimum of 1-5 acres would be great to start, and we are open to scaling up as we grow. We can be flexible with existing (or non-existing) infrastructure - housing, acreage, etc. Open to eventually transforming into an intentional community.

Goals, Values, Vision

We would need to start with establishing ourselves in a new place - building a yurt and growing food for our family (including remediating soil as necessary).

Vision:  to have an accessible, sustainable growing operation that includes, benefits, and educates the surrounding community, such that all people who are involved have ample food, community and a place to celebrate, grieve and learn together.

Values:

  • Regeneration - choosing growing practices that will sustain for future generations and nourish the land.
  • Equity - make our offerings accessible to all interested parties, amplifying traditionally marginalized voices, recognizing people have different needs and doing our best to meet them.
  • Connection - developing local relationships and curating a space for people to come together to build meaningful community.
  • Collective Leadership - as our team grows, designing a non-hierarchal workplace and utilizing tools to ensure all impacted parties have a say in the decision-making process.
  • Food Sovereignty - listening to indigenous and local leaders about what foods the community needs, saving and distributing seeds to the community, educating guests on the inequities in the food system and how to move toward ample food for all.

Goals:

  • Grow fruits, vegetables, fungi, and have egg hens.
  • Utilize permaculture practices, learning regenerative methods to increase biodiversity and nourish the land.
  • Provide housing in exchange for work on the farm.
  • Offer a hub for the community, where people can learn, share, and grow together.
  • Host reskilling workshops, community events focused on food and connection, and even retreats once we have the infrastructure.
  • Be located within a short drive to a nearby town.

Skills:

  • We both come with organic gardening experience.
  • Andrea has worked as a farm hand on several small organic farms, and has administrative, event planning and facilitation experience that will help market and host our outward-facing endeavors.
  • Devin has an Arborist certification, landscaping and orchard experience, and can also operate tractors and other heavy equipment.
