Brieanna Ferguson

My husband and I have always dreamed of living in a place where we can enjoy and preserve the natural beauty of Michigan. With data centers and solar farms threatening our land, we wish to find a slice of this state to protect and develop for generations to come. We both desire a less populated area, and do not mind starting from scratch. He wants to provide a safe place to start and raise a family. I am the same with the focus of permaculture, conservation, and education within the community.

Goals, Values, Vision

Above anything else, the goal is to have acreage that can provide as much self-sufficiency as possible. A place I can learn the skills and fortitude to teach the future generations what's really important: the reality of managing resources, the reverence for natural systems, and the gratitude, as well as, capability of working together. My vision starts with creating systems that provide me and mine with the sustenance to be able to provide for others. Once we can offer community members and stores with cheaper produce, my goal is to create a community grocery store that cuts out the middle man even further. I want to create jobs for community members. I want to create a community garden where kids can come to explore, and parents can come to replenish pantries and spirits alike. While I am brand new to raising farm animals or cash crops, I have a small business selling garnish to restaurants. I do this in a 50 sqft tent, and have made back half the money I put in after only 6 months. I am on track to making my money back and profit before the one year mark. I have enough passion, natural knowledge, carpentry skills, and people skills to feel confident in making a property a place of production and contentment. I am not blind to the weight and overwhelm. This will be a massive undertaking! But I have been taking every opportunity I can to gain knowledge for this dream, and have had a lifelong fascination with nature, nutrition, and helping others. It is time to start doing something about it. One day at a time. I don't expect easy.

Farming Plans and Practices

Farming Method

Merging permaculture with a market garden mindset is how I will create systems that take less energy to maintain than they did to establish. The goal is to mimic mother nature as much as possible, so that she does most of the work for us. From you-pick areas to farmers markets, I will apply whatever method is best suited for my skill set, soil quality, and area location. I want to grow food forests with fruit trees and edible perennials that are native to Michigan. I want to grow annual fruits and vegetables in a way that prevents soil degradation and benefits other parts of the farm. I want to raise cattle, chickens, goats, bunnies, and sheep to reduce food costs for my family and in the community (and to create yarn. I'm obsessed with crochet). I want to hold workshops and create a Youtube channel that teaches people any shift towards self-sufficiency is a shift in the right direction.
