Nikholas Yaga

Because of allergies to modern innovations like parabens and such, I’m having to work with as many natural materials as possible. I’m looking to work with local fiber producers to keep the traditional homespun and crafted traditions alive while helping keep myself healthy. I also want to learn everything there is about how these natural fibers are produced, maintained, and harvested to share this wonderful culture with others to make life more sustainable for those around me.

Goals, Values, Vision

My goals are to be able to either produce enough fiber or to be able to help support other local farmers who produce fiber to make my own clothes and that for my family. I also want to understand the ins and outs of fiber farming and what it takes to raise fiber livestock and grow fiber plants. My biggest goal is to have a full and completely operational homestead with food gardens, fiber gardens and animals, and to be able to teach others about the importance of this lifestyle. I will need to know quite a lot more skills than I currently have, especially as my green thumb is quite brown at the moment. I do also want to be able to raise meat and egg chickens, and meat and dairy goats.

While I’ve not worked formally on any farm I do have experience growing a garden each year as a child with my family as a part of life. I do also have my own small fluffle of rabbits currently that are for fiber production and as house pets. I’m not sure if with the bunnies that could be considered farming part time or not.

Organic Practices

I want to know about both conventional and organic farming methods just to know the difference but I would personally rather utilize as natural of farming options as possible, utilizing marigolds for keeping deer away, crop rotation, pasture rotation, etc.
