Vision for the Farm

We raise high quality dairy goats, heirloom produce, heritage hogs and cattle on our property in the Lakeshore appelation of SW Michigan. We are open to various directions that support our local community. We are a diverse farm that is open to expansion into niche markets and value added products. We focus on creating videos, books and products that benefit the homesteader, hobby farmer and backyard producer. We are expanding into on-farm education and intend to create a space where other local farms can market their wares, due to the prime location and visibility of our property.

Acreage description

Forgotten Forty has been in our family for 3 generations. The property features a 4 bedroom, 2 bath home originally built in 1880, with extensive remodeling and updating over time. The house has a 3 bedroom, 1 bath unit upstairs, and a 1 bedroom, 1 bath garden unit with it's own kitchen. A second manufactured home is being converted to a farm office and farm kitchen, adjacent to the 1/4 acre no-till market garden. There is a traditional gambrel barn built in the 1940's which houses our ADGA Saanen, Alpine and Nubian dairy herd. A clearspan is awaiting installation across the creek to further streamline our goat operation while we begin renovations on the historical barn.

The property has a creek (The Dailey Drain) cutting it into two pieces. 12 acres of pasture are up front, with rotations on another 9+ acres that are mixed woods and meadows. We have a reed canarygrass wetland that is utilized as forage through the summer dry spells. We maintain silvopastures near the homestead and living willow fences are being expanded across the property to further expand our sustainable forage and materials produced on-site.

Description of the property’s current condition, current use(s), and past use(s)

The homestead sits in the front corner of the property, with the main barn and dry lot pens adjacent, and paddocks radiate out from there. The nearly 100yr old barn is being renovated and a new clearspan is being erected. Fences are being converted to high tensile electric perimeter fence, and the goats are rotated in electric netting. We have a significant amount of reed canarygrass wetlands that benefit us greatly in the dry seasons, and the old drainage ditches are eligible to be redug, allowing us better use of that area in the future. Land clearing is possible on the higher ground in the big woods, and our goat herd utilizes the browse there most of the summer.

Additional Information

We prefer organic (insomuch as possible), permaculture and regenerative farming practices. We utilize no-till methods and prioritize soil health. We strive to understand the farm as a functional ecosystem, and to that end we approach things holistically.

Soil Type(s)

We have many different types of land on the farm. Our USDA report will be available for discussion with mutually agreeable parties.
