Vision for the Farm
Our vision to reach a large berkshire swine herd of several hundred head that is fully pastured from farrow to finish, raise several thousand meat birds per year, and maintain a sizeable egg flock of both chickens and ducks. Long term we want to build a small black angus cattle herd. Other ideas could include grazing meat goats in the 120 acre parcel to clear the land for better cattle grazing in the warmer months of the year.
We also keep a small apiary for boutique single source honey production.
We are just starting and open to mentors, local farmers that may want to sell adjacent land to use, and to families that may be interested in partnering with us to grow the business and accelerate the growth of the operation.
Past/Current Land Usage
Acreage description
We have a 90 acre parcel with a few acres of trees and a 120 acre parcel that is mixed woods and wetlands.
Description of the property’s current condition, current use(s), and past use(s)
Both parcels are adjacent to each other and both are large rectangles. The pasture is easy access of S Mackinac Trail and it only about 1.5 miles from the border of Sault Ste Marie, MI. The pasture is has been a managed hay field for many years and is in great condition. We plan to work with the NRCS to further improve the land quality for pasturing animals and natural conservancy.
Soil Type(s)
The top 8-12 inches is good quality top soil that was formerly cattle grazed and is now used for hay and pasturing poultry and pigs. Below the top soil layer is dense clay.
